What's a good gift for a coffee lover?
Short answerSpecialty beans from a respected roaster, a real grinder, or a single-cup brewing upgrade. Avoid anything pod-based for a true enthusiast.
Coffee gifts split into two clear groups: gifts for casual coffee drinkers and gifts for serious enthusiasts. Buying the wrong tier reads worse than not buying at all.
For serious enthusiasts: specialty single-origin beans from a respected roaster (Market Lane, Industry Beans, Ona Coffee, Single O, Sample Coffee, Proud Mary). A coffee subscription from one of these works for 3–6 months. A real burr grinder if they're still using a blade grinder — Fellow Ode, Baratza Encore, or Wilfa Svart.
Brewing upgrades: a Hario V60 with the right server and filters, a Chemex, an AeroPress with quality filters, a Fellow Stagg pour-over kettle, a moka pot from Bialetti. These all land well with someone already brewing manually.
For casual drinkers: a quality coffee gift card (Market Lane, Industry Beans), a beautiful ceramic mug from a local potter, or a tin of really good cocoa for the partner who's actually a hot chocolate person.
What to avoid for a serious drinker: pod machines (Nespresso, Keurig — they've moved past these), generic bean blends from supermarkets, pre-ground coffee in a tin, or anything Starbucks-branded.
If you're not sure which tier they're at, ask. Coffee enthusiasts will happily tell you what they're brewing on.
