50 is one of the bigger milestone birthdays and the spend bracket reflects it. But by 50, most recipients have learned what they actually value — and it's almost never more stuff.

Friend: $100–200. A premium bottle, a high-quality piece of something they collect, or a contribution to a pooled experience.

Close friend or sibling: $200–400. A planned experience (winery lunch, tasting menu, day spa, scenic flight), a meaningful keepsake (engraved item, custom piece, fine jewellery), or a quality upgrade to a daily-use object.

Adult child to parent, or partner: $300–1,000+. A surprise weekend, a real piece of jewellery or watch, a custom family photography session, or a trip contribution.

Group gifts make the most sense at 50 — siblings and friends pooling to fund a single significant experience (overseas trip contribution, luxury weekend, milestone dinner for the whole family) usually outperforms individual gifts.

Avoid: 'half a century' novelty, generic homewares, and anything age-mocking. The gifts that get talked about years later are experiences and keepsakes, not objects.
