Hampers are the most-bought and least-considered Christmas gift in Australia. The supermarket version is mostly packaging: shredded paper, a basket nobody keeps, and one good item surrounded by crackers and shortbread.
Buy the opposite. Three or four items the person would happily buy alone — an Australian extra-virgin olive oil, a bar or box from a real chocolatier, a bottle chosen for their taste, a good preserve or condiment — beats a twelve-item box every time, usually at the same price.
Hampers work best for households rather than individuals: new neighbours, your partner's parents, a family you're staying with, a client office. They're a weak choice for someone living alone who doesn't cook.
Delivery: perishables need a confirmed delivery date and someone at home. Order by early December, avoid sending chilled goods to an office closing for the break, and never post chocolate interstate in a heatwave without insulated packaging.
